The Renaissance Project Announces Launch of Racial Healing Presentation Series

The Renaissance Project, Community Book Center and Leona Tate Foundation for Change are pleased to announce the first of an eight-part series of presentations by African American women as part of an initiative entitled African American Women: Breaking Silence to Heal Ourselves and Our Communities.

On Thursday, April 26, 2012, 6:00PM, join Leona Tate, Gail Etienne Stripling, and Tessie Prevost Williams, collectively known as the “McDonogh Three” as they captivate the audience with detailed recollection of their experiences of integrating McDonogh #19 Elementary School over fifty years ago. Each of these women will contribute to a panel discussion that delves into both the positive and adverse effects of a not -so distant era of racial segregation and oppression. The interaction will demonstrate how desegregating Orleans Parish Schools molded their educations and shaped the course of their lives.

Leona Tate Describes her Vision for the McDonogh Three Memorial

The original McDonogh 19 school (now the Louis Armstrong Elementary School) was one of the first two New Orleans schools to be integrated in 1960. Currently, Perez is assisting the Leona Tate Foundation and Plessy & Ferguson Foundation with the design of a pavilion commemorating Leona Tate’s experience and the other first grade students that were part of this historic event. Golf Course Named for Trailblazing Black Golfer Reopens

Mayor Landrieu was joined by city officials, golf enthusiasts, and members of the Joseph M. Bartholomew, Sr., family in celebrating the reopening of the Joseph M. Bartholomew, Sr. Municipal Golf Course in the Pontchartrain Park neighborhood. Perez, APC designed the renovation in consultation with Gill Design, Inc. and former PGA Tour player and New Orleans native Kelly Gibson. Duininck, Inc., served as prime contractor on the project.

The Leona Tate Foundation for Change and the Plessy & Ferguson Foundation announce plans for a Memorial to commemorate the desegregation of New Orleans’ public school. The Foundations are working with Perez to develop the memorial site that will both honor the past and inspire future generations.
