Originally designed in the 1950’s by Joseph Bartholomew, the first African-American golf course designer in the nation, Perez redesigned an entirely new complex in 3 phases, after Hurricane Katrina completely destroyed it, recreating an important community gathering space for Pontchartrain Park—golf course, landscaping, irrigation system, clubhouse, restaurant, pro shop, community meeting space, maintenance & cart storage buildings.

This rehabilitation of the historic Carver Theater returns the 65-year-old building to its original use as a multipurpose entertainment venue. This rehabilitation not only restores the existing spaces to their original splendor but modernizes the facility to current code standards. The addition of a new volume on the backside now houses many of the required support functions allowing the spaces in the original footprint to remain as they were originally purposed. The main theater space is left open – with no fixed seating – so that the venue can be used for jazz, big band ensembles, chamber music, operettas, musicals, stage plays, dance recitals, and many other types of shows.

Perez created a GIS map showing the geographic centers of culture in and around Claiborne Avenue, from one end of Orleans Parish to the other– created a website, online survey, & in-person interviews of culture-makers in the Entertainment, Arts, Culinary, Literary, Preservation, & Design industries.
